What is the stations focus? The radio station I have chosen to conduct my podcast on is BBC Radio 1. Radio 1's focus / remit is "to entertain and engage a broad range of young listeners with a distinctive mix of contemporary music and speech". This is the primary reason I chose this station for my podcast because I think their remit is really interesting- I think it's great that they're trying to incorporate the younger generation into the world of radio. By mixing more current music with other genres and speech elements it is much more appealing to a younger audience giving them a station more tailored to their wants and needs. This is great because especially now, music on demand like Spotify and YouTube for example is more popular amongst millennials, so It's cool that a radio station are making the effort to cater to a younger audience as well as older.
Who are the target audience? BBC Radio 1's target audience is 15-29 year-olds. However, as well as this they also make an effort to include some content for younger teens, meaning that there isn't a gap in the market. Although the station claims it's target audience is 15-19 year-olds, in recent years the average age of its UK audience has risen to the age of 33.
What does the station do to appeal to its audience? As well as playing the latest chart music, the station plays a variety of different genres for example rock, which means they are very mainstream in terms of what they broadcast. I think the way the station manages to appeal to such a vast audience is down to the diversity of what the producers and presenters create and broadcast on the show.
How is the station structured and organised? Like many of the other BBC radio stations, Radio one is broken up into sections and these are at different times during the day, presented by various different presenters. Nick Grimshaw for example presents the breakfast show
