1922- In October 1922, British radio is born alongside the creation of the BBC- including General Electric and the Marconi Company, which had developed the first experimental radio station, 2MT, in 1920. The first national radio broadcast was made on the 14th November from station 2LO. The transmission was made using a 1.5kW transmitter- a huge machine made from wood, glass, and metal. At this time, a license was required in order to listen to the radio. For the grand total of 10 shillings you could buy a license. However the audience was very limited to begin with consisting of only 30,000 people nationwide.
1923- 1923 brought the printing of the first edition of Radio Times. 1929- The Daventry Transmitter is created, widening potential as it is the UK's first long wave transmitter. 1932- The BBC moved to the Broadcasting House in central London. 1939- On the 1st of September PM Neville Chamberlain broadcast to the British nation that they were at war with Germany. After this, came a broadcast from king George VI on 3rd May (the first evening of the WWII. 1950- A huge peak in radio license holders rises to 11.8 million. 1955- The BBC starts to broadcast in frequency modulation (FM). This is considerably better than the previous AM as this was very effected by interference from bad weather. 1964- The birth of pirate radio. Stations Radio Caroline and Radio Atlanta begun broadcasting from ships in the North Sea. 1967- BBC Radio 1,2,3, and 4 is launched. In August of this year, an act is made which deems pirate stations |
1926- In January the first example of television is shown to members of the Royal Institution.
1928- In July, John Baird demonstrates colour television. 1929- Baird broadcasts television using the BBC's London transmitter. 1930- The creation of a new transmitter means that audio and visual content can be transmitted simultaneously. This is also the year of the first British television drama: Pirandello's The man with the flower in his mouth. 1932- The BBC takes over programme making for the 30 line television service. 1936- The BBC began broadcasting regular high-definition programmes. 1937- The first major outside television broadcast; the coronation of King George VI. Only nine thousand households in the London area own a television set. 1939- British television is shut down due to the break out of WWII. 20,000 TV sets in Britain at this time. 1946- BBC television re-opens. |

1909- First UK cinema had opened. 1914- Lots of national film industries were established. 1932- First major film festival created to celebrate the art of cinema. 1951- The first video tape recorder. 1977- The first VHS Tape, released in North America. 1985- Blockbuster created. 1995- DVD invented as a distribution method. 2005- Youtube is founded and many people decide to watch entertainment and buy films from there. |
